Background
Karey has been in the field of health since 1989. Originally trained as a family court counsellor in Canada, he retrained as a generalist counsellor in New Zealand 14 years ago. He now utilises Solution Focused, Narrative, and Motivational Interviewing approaches.
Karey is also a researcher who has presented at conferences both in New Zealand and abroad. His educator background includes training professionals and tertiary students in the field of health.
He has a strong community orientation. He has volunteered his time to the CDHB Consumer Council, CPIT Counselling Programme, Canterbury Men’s Centre, and the New Zealand Civil Defence. He currently is an academic mentor at the University of Canterbury.
In his free time he enjoys cycle touring, music, and walking.
Relationships
Karey, while not a couple counsellor, better enables individuals to understand what influences (i.e., childhood, gender, and culture) the way we relate to others at an everyday level. He assists individuals to develop better ways of relating with others at home, work, and social environs.
Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Change/Loss
Karey assist individuals who are experiencing stress/anxiety, depression, and grief. He supports individuals to better cope with stress, be less anxious, and increase mood. He also works with individuals who want to better manage change (i.e., relocation, employment/career, life stage, and/or cultural) and loss (i.e., lifestyle, health, and bereavement). He has experience assisting individuals with earthquake related stress and/or trauma.
Work/Employment
Karey discusses, in a safe non-judgmental way, issues individuals may be having in their work. He provides professional support to professionals in the health and education sectors. He has an in-depth understanding of health rights and obligations including the process of informed consent. He has managerial and governance experience.
Fees
Karey charges $90 for a 50 minute session. This may be negotiable depending on your financial circumstances. Funding is also available for those on a benefit or low income via WINZ Disability Allowance.
