Health Maintenance

It is true that in China, people would pay their doctor when they were well – rather than when they were sick. The Doctor’s job was to keep them well, right?? Our health system is quite different,  we focus on what we can do once something happens. How would it be like to be clear on what would ensure health while we still have it?

I notice with patients, that each person is different. We all have our own unique response to what is happening in our lives and the stresses that come. No two remedies would be the same for two people, not when looking through a Chinese medicine window. Chinese medicine takes your individual presentation and tailor makes a treatment.

Regular treatment is like a gentle reminder to your system. Bringing you to a state of balance and addressing any of the ways that you drift away from wellness, we all have our weaknesses. Health is acknowledging what your weaknesses are and doing your best to support them. I do think it is true that sometimes our weaknesses become our strengths. Why? Because we give them so much of our attention! Once you know where you often get stuck, you can look towards balance.

An example is a patient I had with pre-menstrual tension. She would get headaches, sore breasts, be irritated and emotional and then would feel wiped out when her period came. After some regular treatment, this reduced considerably, yet she also needed to change her day to day behaviour to help make the change stick. I encouraged her to exercise regularly before her period, even if she didn’t feel like it. Sour food is great for the Liver so warm lemon water was suggested each morning (you could do this most mornings anyways!). In order to keep her emotions flowing, she organised a regular get together with friends as she got later on in the month. No late night internet or afternoon coffees helped with her headaches too. Coming along to acupuncture once a month before her period would help soothe her symptoms and was a way to support the change with me reminding her of what she could to do. A valuable tool.

Team work with health is imperative. For change to happen systemically there needs to be a multitude of changes throughout the life. Acupuncture helps move the Qi to get things changing and supports the process while alleviating symptoms. And you, the patient, are responsible day to day to make the best choices – this can be lot easier when you are educated about what can help.

A comment on Knowledge, Sydney Masters Training Aug 2012

On arrival in Campbelltown, Sydney, I choose to spend time at the library. A plethora of books is at my fingertips, knowledge abound.  In this instance it is all books on Chinese medicine and specifically women’s health. This is a field I have been practising in for the last 7 years adding a degree of practical experience, always with room for improvement.

Vipassana meditation* calls the highest form of knowledge ‘experiential knowledge’, meaning to be experienced oneself. This is above knowledge that is received because it is read or someone told you it is true. Chinese medicine is founded on ‘experiential knowledge’ as over the centuries, through experience, the medicine has grown and evolved. Like any learner, we often have to begin with someone else telling us something is true and reading about it, it is over time that the experience of knowing it is true is cultivated.

Fortunately this Masters course is designed to be based on what is actually relevant to clinical practise. Assessments involve choosing real clinical cases and analysing chinese and western medicinal research, to also critique the treatment that was given – was best practise followed? What could be improved?

This seems to be a true melding of knowledge; experiential, read & told. I can see that this will improve my practise when confronted with a similar case, be it osteoarthritis, nausea in pregnancy, dysmenorrhea, achilles tendinopathy or sacroiliac joint pain – to name a few topics that I have been researching in the last few months.

As a side benefit I am learning to express my understanding and thoughts clearly in writing. This gives me another avenue to share information about health and healing, fabulous! My true passion for learning comes to the surface and in my recent theme of gratitude, I am thankful to be here doing this now.

Masters in Health Science (Acupuncture)

Well, the course is about to start! I (Lori-Ellen) am pleased to be embarking on some new learning and to be inspired by new teachers and peers. I will be taking classes in evidence based medicine, women’s health and musculo-skeletal problems. A week in warm Sydney will get me into the groove. I am sure this is going to have a great positive effect on my clients and my inspiration about Chinese Medicine 🙂

NLP Training with Richard Bolstad

Recently I have completed my second NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) practitioner training. I am so glad I did it twice, both experiences were completely new even though the material was mostly similar. NLP is the about curiosity around how we think & modelling excellence – as in taking what successful people do really well and modelling it in other areas of life. Now to me, this is useful!

I also learnt some techniques for dealing with Trauma which in Christchurch right now is especially useful. Tad James ‘Timeline Therapy’ was also included and you can ask me in person to explain that one.

From now on, this new information is going to filter into the work that I do. Assistance with repetitive thoughts that are less than useful when dealing with a physical complaint, some assistance with relaxation, integration of the different parts of ourselves, allergy cure & trauma cure.

It is great to try out new things and I know from my own experience that it was transformative! This is a fitting description as you can find out more about the course I did with Richard Bolstad at www.transformations.co.nz.

ACC & Acupuncture

Currently ACC covers acupuncture treatment for accidents causing physical injury. This could be a fall, a sporting accident (like falling off your mountain bike) or a twisted ankle/broken bone to name a few. Once you have your ACC45 number which you can receive from your Doctor or Physio (within the last year), then you are eligible to have Acupuncture treatment covered by ACC. This can be in conjunction with your physio treatment or any other treatment that you are having for the injury.

Acupuncture is very effective for physical trauma and has excellent recovery results.

Lori-Ellen Grant is an ACC treatment provider, call us if you have any questions or would like to make a booking.
